Manchester United have sidelined Antony indefinitely in light of the recent domestic abuse allegations made against him. The Brazilian reportedly headbutted and punched his ex girlfriend earlier this year, which required medical assistance at the time.
An investigation is ongoing in Manchester as well as back in Brazil. The winger was signed only last summer from Ajax after a dramatic transfer saga. And now, he is unavailable for the club owing to issues away from the pitch.
Antony not to be included in Manchester United squad with domestic abuse investigation ongoing
“Man Utd acknowledges the allegations made against Antony. He will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations”.
“As a club we condemn acts of violence and abuse,” an official statement from United read.
The winger was dropped from the Brazil National team for the World Cup qualifiers as well, with Gabriel Jesus taking his place. Antony has also issued a statement of his own, further elaborating on the decision made to keep him away from the first team.
“I have agreed with United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me”.
“This was a mutual decision”.
“I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, I will fully cooperate with the police,” he wrote.
Manchester United have been plagued by issues off the pitch, with Mason Greenwood’s case, the Glazers putting up the club for sale and then going back on their decision, Jadon Sancho speaking out publicly over Erik Ten Hag. And now, they are having to manage Antony and his domestic abuse allegations, making it a very tumultuous time for the club.
