Manchester United’s top four hopes might be over after their 1-1 draw against Chelsea. The Blues have failed to win at Old Trafford for the last nine years, and continued that record last night as they could only finish level with their rivals.
David De Gea was at his best once again, denying Kai Havertz in the first half despite the forward being through on goal. The German was denied several times by De Gea, and his contributions helped keep scores level for the first hour. However, Marcos Alonso would find the breakthrough for the Blues at the hour mark, volleying the ball into the bottom corner.
Manchester United share points against Chelsea to end Champions League ambitions
It took only two minutes after Alonso’s goal for Cristiano Ronaldo to score and equalise for his team. Former Chelsea player Nemanja Matic chipped the ball over the defense and into the path of Ronaldo, who took one touch before striking it past Edouard Mendy.
Chelsea had several chances to win the game, and their lack of composure in front of goal has cost them another three points. Thomas Tuchel will have to find a way to turn the draws into wins next season, if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.
For Manchester United, though, the Erik Ten Hag era cannot come soon enough. They have struggled to deliver in the big games this season, and are seemingly headed into the Europa Conference League next season.
