Manchester United 1-0 Wolves: Moutinho scores late to spoil Ronaldo’s return to captaincy

Cristiano Ronaldo wore the Manchester United captain’s armband for the first time in 14 years against Wolves. However, things didn’t go as planned, with the visitors earning their first win at Old Trafford since 1980 thanks to a late goal from Joao Mourinho. 

The midfielder pounced upon a clearance from David De Gea, following a cross from Adama Traore.

Manchester United suffer first defeat under Ralf Rangnick against Wolves 

The Red Devils were outplayed in their first game of the new year. The team looked lost throughout the game, and they only managed two shots on target throughout the game. In contrast, Wolves managed to test David De Gea six times out of 19. 

The Spaniard bailed his team out for the majority of the game, but was unable to prevent Moutinho from scoring. And ultimately, that proved to be the difference maker in the match.

Despite throwing Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford to try and help Manchester United’s dearth of opportunities throughout the game, they were unable to do anything to uplift the team’s performance. 

The defeat against Bruno Lage was Ralf Rangnick’s first defeat as the manager of Manchester United.

With their defeat against an inspired Wolves, United are in seventh place with 31 points from 19 games. They are four points away from fourth placed Arsenal, and 22 away from Manchester City. On the other hand, Wolves are eighth, three points behind Manchester United.
