Probably the only bit of controversy to come out of the Ballon d’Or ceremony was the club of the year award. Manchester City were given the award, with the Sky Blues having the most Ballon d’Or nominations of any side.
However, the trend shows that the club of the year is usually the one that lifted the Champions League trophy. And in this case, Real Madrid won not only the Champions League but also the La Liga title by a large margin.
Confusion in Spain as Manchester City win club of the year award
With Karim Benzema winning the Ballon d’Or and Thibaut Courtois winning the Yashin Trophy, Real Madrid were also expected to be the club of the year. However, that didn’t happen.
City were able to win the Premier League title, but were, in fact, knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid. The official Twitter account of the La Liga winners posted the ‘two eyes’ emoji, as a mark of surprise at the announcement.
Even the players found it quite ridiculous that City had been named the club of the year ahead of Real Madrid. “When Manchester City won the trophy for the best club? We looked at each other and laughed,” Thibaut Courtois said at the ceremony.
