According to Fabrizio Romano on his “Here We Go” podcast, contract extensions will be the essence of the business conducted by clubs in 2021.

The Italian journalist confirmed that Gabriel Jesus is to stay at City. Pep Guardiola likes him and City see him as part of the future. While his form in front of goal has been questionable, as has his consistency in filling in for the injured Sergio Aguero, the Cityzens are firmly behind the Brazilian striker.

On the other hand, work is in progress for a new contract deal to be agreed with PFA Player of the Year, Kevin de Bruyne. The final agreement is speculated to be very close. An announcement can be expected regarding the Belgian’s future sometime next week.

Manchester City’s rivals, Liverpool will also try to renew a lot of contracts in 2021. New deals for centre back Virgil Van Dijk and Fabinho are already in the works. Both want to stay at the club and are really happy with their current situation.

There is no realistic reason to assume that the two defenders are unhappy with their place in the club and would like to go elsewhere.

Owing to the financial chaos caused by the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of clubs will have to prioritise keeping their star players with expiring contracts first, ahead of recruiting new big players.
