Manchester City defeated their rivals Manchester United 4-1 in the derby at the Etihad Stadium. The visitors started the day in the top four, but have now dropped out of the Champions League spots after Arsenal’s win in their game against Watford.
Ralf Rangnick’s first experience in the Manchester derby was a crushing one, with Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez getting a double each to secure a comfortable win for Pep Guardiola’s men.
Jadon Sancho scored against his former club to level things up after De Bruyne’s opener. But, his side would end up being outscored through the course of the game.
Manchester City win the derby at home
Manchester United’s defense was not up the mark once again, conceding an easy opening goal, converted by Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian doubled up in the first half itself, and was ultimately named the man of the match after he provided the assist for Riyad Mahrez’s first goal as well.
Mahrez now has over 20 goals across all competitions this season, with his brace. The Algerian was played offside by a boot, after he had his second goal written off for offside initially. But the decision was overturned by VAR.
Throughout the second half, Manchester City were on the front foot. They barely let their opponents have any time on the ball, and continued to create opportunities until the final whistle.
It was an embarrassing defeat for Ralf Rangnick’s men because they were not in the game at all. And now, the road ahead will be a challenging one for them since they have some big games lined up.
