Manchester City defeated Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final meeting. They head into the return leg of the fixture with the advantage over the Spanish side, to be played at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Pep Guardiola’s side had an extremely dominant outing from start to finishing, and played their usual style of possession-based football to the fullest. At the end of the game, City had 79% of the ball and a goal to the good, capping off a remarkable performance.

The Manchester City skipper scored the only goal of the game, after he was played in by Phil Foden, who came on as a substitute. The academy graduate provided the spark that the team needed to get one decisive chance, and De Bruyne took the finish extremely well despite the angle.

Diego Simeone’s men could not manage a single shot on goal throughout the game. They didn’t have a corner in comparison to City’s nine set pieces either. Despite Atletico Madrid defending against the Premier League champions very well, they could not find a way to break through to the other half and test Ederson.

The La Liga champions will be hopeful of an improved performance if they are to make it to the next round. But as of now, the Sky Blues already have one foot in the semi finals of the Champions League.
