Newcastle United has announced that manager Steve Bruce has resigned by mutual consent. Bruce’s most recent match was a 3-2 loss against Tottenham on Sunday. His departure has now been confirmed, as the new owners’ wish to replace him as soon as their takeover was confirmed became public knowledge.

Their statement reads: “Newcastle United can confirm that Steve Bruce has left his position as head coach by mutual consent”

“Newcastle United would like to place on record its gratitude to Steve for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.”

Bruce never managed to win over the supporters of St James’ Park. Former owner Mike Ashley did not regard him as an ambitious appointment because he had previously led their arch-rivals, Sunderland. He did, however, assist them in maintaining their Premier League status during a period when they had mostly poor players.

He added: “I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club.”

“I would like to thank my coaching team, the players, and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.”

“This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond.”

Graeme Jones, Bruce’s assistant, will lead the club to Crystal Palace on Saturday, with the Magpies still looking for their first Premier League win of the season and just one spot off the bottom of the standings.
