Manchester United are eyeing Lazio midfielder Sergej Milenkovic-Savic as the alternative to Frenkie de Jong this summer. They have been in talks with Barcelona over the last few weeks, and have agreed a €75 million fee for the player as well.
However, de Jong has been resisting a move to Old Trafford despite having the chance to reunite with Erik Ten Hag. The midfielder has stated that he is comfortable at Camp Nou and has no plans to move elsewhere ahead of the new season.
Sergej Milenkovic-Savic emerges as Frenkie de Jong alternative
Xavi’s recent comments suggest that the Netherlands international could be sold this season. And financial reasons are a big part of the decision. Frenkie de Jong is set to earn over €30 million for the 22/23 season, which the Barcelona board sees as disproportionate.
Even though they want the central midfielder to take a pay cut, the player is reluctant to reduce his salary. Moreover, he is owed around €20 million in wages, which Manchester United want Barcelona to clear before the transfer.
As a result, Sergej Milenkovic-Savic would be a similar player that could come into Erik Ten Hag’s side. Lazio are anticipating a €70 million offer for the Serbian, and would be open to letting him go if such an offer arrives. But as of right now, United have not made any initial contact with the Serie A club over his signing.
