Aston Villa defeated Manchester United at the Old Trafford 1-0, with centre-back Kortney Hause scoring the only goal of the game. The home team were given a late chance to take a point away from the match as the referee awarded a penalty at the 90th minute. Hause had an eventful end to the game since he was the defender who handled the ball to give the penalty to the opposition.
Bruno Fernandes took the spot-kick ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, and blasted his shot over the bar to the dismay of all spectators. The Manchester United midfielder is usually very accurate from the spot, but his decision to step ahead of Portugal teammate Ronaldo given the 36-year-old’s record has not paid off.
Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez dived the right way, but Fernandes could not get his shot on target to test the keeper at the very least. Hause breathed a sigh of relief as his goal was not equalised despite Fernandes having a superb chance to do so.
The visitors took the game to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and deserved the win, after staying on the front foot for the majority of the game. Aston Villa have won at Old Trafford for the first time since 2009, and the win sends the Red Devils to fourth place in the Premier League after starting the day in first place alongside Chelsea and Liverpool.
Villa will face Tottenham next Sunday, while Manchester United will be in action in midweek against Europa League winners Villareal in the Champions League.
