A Fresh Start in Switzerland

After spending a season and a half with Lorient, Mendy has decided to embark on a new journey in Switzerland. The French full-back played 15 matches for the Ligue 1 side before their relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

His move to Zurich offers him a fresh opportunity to regain top-flight momentum and contribute to the club’s ambitions in the Super League.

Mendy’s Career So Far

Mendy’s football journey has seen both highs and lows. He was a key part of Manchester City’s squad between 2017 and 2022, making 75 appearances and winning multiple domestic trophies under Pep Guardiola. However, his career took a major turn when he was suspended by City in 2021 after being charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault. Following a legal battle, Mendy was acquitted of all charges in 2023.

Shortly after his acquittal, he joined Lorient, marking his return to professional football nearly two years after his last competitive game. Despite limited appearances, his performances were enough to attract interest from FC Zurich, who are currently eighth in the Swiss Super League.

Legal Battles and Triumph Over Man City

Beyond his performances on the pitch, Mendy’s off-field issues have been well documented. In November 2024, he won an employment tribunal against Manchester City, which ruled that the club had wrongfully withheld the majority of his wages following his suspension in 2021. The tribunal determined that City owed him £11 million ($14.1 million), a significant financial victory for the player.

This legal win, combined with his move to Zurich, marks a significant turning point in his career as he looks to put past controversies behind him and focus on football.

Zurich’s Current Standing and Transfer Strategy

FC Zurich, currently sitting eighth in the Swiss Super League, are seven points behind league leaders Basel. With the Swiss transfer window open until February 17, the club saw an opportunity to reinforce their defense with Mendy’s experience and technical ability. His signing could provide the team with a much-needed boost as they aim to climb the league table and challenge for European qualification.

Mendy’s move to Switzerland represents a new chapter for the former Premier League defender. With a contract until 2026, he has a chance to rebuild his reputation and contribute significantly to FC Zurich’s ambitions in the coming seasons.
