After 18 long years, Malayalam cinema’s two biggest icons shared the screen in *Patriot* — a spy thriller directed by Mahesh Narayanan. The anticipation was electric. The delivery? Heartbreaking.

When Mammootty and Mohanlal team up, you expect fireworks. *Patriot* was supposed to be the blockbuster event of 2026 for [Malayalam cinema](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayalam_cinema). Instead, it is limping toward a total theatrical run unlikely to cross the ₹50 crore mark — a sobering outcome for a film of this scale and pedigree.

### Kerala Box Office: Day-Wise Collection

| Day | Kerala Collection |
| --- | --- |
| Day 1 (Opening) | ₹8.50 Crore |
| Day 2 | ₹5.25 Crore |
| Day 3 | ₹5.00 Crore |
| Day 4 | ₹1.75 Crore |
| Day 5 | ₹1.50 Crore |
| Day 6 | ₹1.25 Crore |
| Day 7 | ₹1.00 Crore |
| Day 8 | ₹0.80 Crore |
| **Total (8 Days)** | **~₹25.05 Crore** |

The numbers tell a painful story. After a thunderous ₹8.50 crore opening day — fuelled purely by fan frenzy — the film nosedived with over 80% drop by Day 4. Word-of-mouth simply wasn’t there to sustain momentum. With ₹80 lakh added on Day 8, the second weekend is projected to close around ₹28 crore in Kerala.

### What Went Wrong?

*Patriot* entered theatres as a potential franchise-launcher. The reunion of Mammootty and Mohanlal after nearly two decades had fans buzzing for months. But excitement doesn’t equal satisfaction — and audiences made that clear with their wallets. The spy thriller reportedly failed to match its larger-than-life premise, leading to mixed reviews that choked its legs from Day 3 onward. ### What’s Next for Mollywood?

All eyes now shift to **Drishyam 3** — the next big Mohanlal-fronted release, carrying the weight of a cult franchise. After Patriot’s stumble, the pressure on that film is enormous, both commercially and emotionally for fans who hoped 2026 would be a landmark year for Malayalam cinema.
