Information obtained by MacRumors suggests that the forthcoming next-generation iPad Pro, slated for a 2024 release, may feature support for MagSafe charging. The insight is derived from a source familiar with manufacturers producing magnets for Apple devices. While unconfirmed at present, previous rumors have hinted at Apple’s exploration of wireless charging capabilities for the iPad.

All About the MagSafe Charging in iPad Pro

In 2021, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was contemplating a glass back for the 2022 iPad Pro, which would enable wireless charging. Gurman specifically mentioned Apple testing a MagSafe system for the iPad Pro. Despite expectations, the 2022 iPad Pro models did not incorporate wireless charging, a glass back, or substantial design modifications. It is plausible that Apple deferred this feature for a subsequent release.

For the 2024 lineup, Apple is said to be planning new 11.1 and 13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays, accompanied by design updates as part of the refresh. Given that the iPad Pro design has remained relatively unchanged for several years, a makeover is overdue.

While the incorporation of a glass-backed iPad Pro in 2024 is a possibility within the OLED refresh, it remains unconfirmed. A glass back would potentially increase vulnerability to damage from drops, mirroring the iPhone’s susceptibility. On the upside, it would facilitate the compatibility of new wire-free accessories and a universal MagSafe charger usable for both the iPhone and iPad. Additionally, the iPad might support the 15W magnetic Qi2 chargers currently in development by third-party manufacturers.

Though 15W MagSafe charging is slower than wired charging via USB-C, akin to the iPhone, it expands charging options for Apple device users when needed. There’s also speculation that the MagSafe charging for the iPad might resemble a Mac-like magnetic charger rather than the iPhone-style magnetic charger. Apple is concurrently developing a more Mac-like aluminum Magic Keyboard set to debut with the 2024 iPad Pro launch. Moreover, the upcoming iPads will share the same M3 chips found in the MacBook Pro, further aligning them with the Mac ecosystem.
