Luka Modric is extremely close to extending his stay at Real Madrid till 2022. That is according to Fabrizio Romano and Francesco Porzio on their Here We Go podcast on Patreon.

The duo previously hinted at Modric being keen to accept whatever offer that Real would table for the Croatian, and an agreement looks very close between the two parties. Only minor details remain to be sorted out in the player’s contract, with most important points decided already.

The player’s contract with the club expires in the summer, and the club will be extending the deal till the summer of 2021 which will see Modric play for the club till he is 36. The Ballon d’Or winner has hinted at potentially wanting to end his career at Real Madrid, and at 36, it would be a reasonable age to hang up his boots.

However, should Modric still find that there is still life left in his feet for more time as a professional, a move to Arabia could be on the cards since clubs from the middle east have inquired about his availability in the past.

Modric is one of the most experienced players in the team, and is also one of the most valuable assets to Madrid, forming a sturdy trio alongside Toni Kroos and Casemiro. The Croatian has been involved in each of Madrid’s three consecutive Champions League titles, along with another one before that.

Having won almost everything there is to win playing for club, along with making it to the finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup with the Croatian national team, Luka Modric has had an amazingly illustrious career. It is only fitting that a player of his calibre get a send off worth remembering, and hence, a retirement at Madrid would be very special for many reasons.
