Marcelo and Luka Modric have tested positive for COVID-19, according to Real Madrid. The Brazilian has been on the bench a lot lately, but the Croatian’s absence will be felt, especially after his spectacular performance in the Madrid derby last weekend.
Real Madrid’s statement read: “Real Madrid C. F. inform that our players Marcelo and Luka Modric have tested positive for COVID-19.”
Current Situation
Real did not indicate whether the two were experiencing any symptoms, but they have been placed in quarantine in accordance with Spanish health regulations and will miss Sunday’s league match against Cadiz.
The rising number of COVID-19 cases in Europe is influencing soccer. Valencia revealed the cases of their head coach and two players on Monday. In the previous week, 42 Premier League players and staff have tested positive, the most in the league in a seven-day span.
Last week, UEFA postponed Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa Conference League match against Rennes due to an epidemic within the club.
Games They are Going to Miss
Real Madrid will play Cadiz on Sunday, December 19, before traveling to Bilbao to face Athletic Club on Wednesday, December 22. As a result, Marcelo and Modric are unlikely to be available for these two games after testing positive, with the first match they could play being on January 2 at Getafe.
Modric, 36, has been in excellent form recently, and Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti singled him out for praise after the team’s 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid this weekend. In 12 games this season, Modric has four assists, while Marcelo has been used infrequently by Ancelotti.
