Former Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira joined Atletico Madrid on the last day of the transfer window during the summer. While Thomas Partey famously went in the other direction, the two deals were independent of each other and while Partey was signed permanently, Torreira was signed on a loan deal.
The 24-year-old has only made 10 appearances for his new club across all competitions this season. Of those, 5 have come in La Liga and 4 have come in the Champions League.
The Uruguayan recently struggled with coronavirus and had to spend a spell out on the sidelines to recover. His performances have hence been something to be desired.
Speaking about the player’s future on the “Here We Go” podcast on Patreon, Fabrizio Romano said that there were no plans for Torreira to return to the Emirates in January.
As agreed between the two clubs, the loan deal will expire in the summer of 2021, and Atletico Madrid have the option of buying the player if they find his performances to be worth the investment.
Considering it is a new country and a new club for him, Romano mentioned that it will take him some time to adapt and really get going. But under a coach of the stature of Diego Simeone, the sky could be the limit for the young midfielder.
