Although France were able to start their 2022 World Cup with a win, Lucas Hernandez injured himself in the initial part of the game. And with that, the defending champions will be without another key player in their campaign.

They have already lost Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante, Presnel Kimpembe, Mike Maignan, Christopher Nkunku and Karim Benzema to injury. And now, the Bayern Munich defender has joined the list with an ACL injury.

Hernandez has struggled with injuries for the last few years, with over 100 days missed in 19/20. However, he barely missed matches in 20/21 before missing ten games last year. Now, his 22/23 season is over as it will take a few months for him to recover from the injury.

The 26-year-old played as a left-back and was replaced by his brother Theo Hernandez. However, he isn’t the only Bayern Munich player to pick up an injury in the World Cup. After Sadio Mane’s surgery and Lucas Hernandez’s ACL, Noussair Mazraoui might be out for a while as well, having been subbed off at half time.

France will not be able to name a replacement since the deadline was a day prior to the opening game. And now, they will have to compete in the tournament a man short.
