Liverpool have had an opening bid worth £37 million rejected for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia. The Saints are holding out for a price tag in the region of £50 million, and have turned the opening offer down as a result.

The two clubs need to find an agreement over the transfer fee for the move to go through. Personal terms are not an issue because the Belgian is open to joining the Reds. He would be the third new midfielder to join them this summer after Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Merseyside club have been linked with a number of defensive midfielders over the last few weeks. Khephren Thuram and Manu Kone have both been rumoured as possible options. But, Romeo Lavia has emerged as a strong contender to make the move over the other two options.

Liverpool could sell Fabinho to Saudi Arabia, after accepting Al Ettifaq’s offer for Jordan Henderson. And in that case, they would need a defensive midfielder to help provide solidity.

Although only 19, Lavia has impressed many big clubs with his performances this past season. And even though Arsenal and Chelsea were interested in signing, Liverpool have made the first move by opening talks. But, the two clubs are still not close to an agreement yet.

Talks will progress in the coming days to find a solution for the transfer, since Liverpool are keen on completing it soon.
