Liverpool are planning a clearout of their midfield this summer, with several players set to leave. Naby Keita is expected to leave on a free transfer, alongside Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Both players are out of a contract at the end of the season, and there are no plans to negotiate new deals with them.
Moreover, Arthur Melo isn’t expected to stay permanently either. The Brazilian was a last minute signing, having joined the club on loan from Juventus. However, he has struggled with an injury since arriving and has barely played for the first team. As a result, he will return to Juventus at the end of the season.
Liverpool’s midfield clearout plans remain unchanged
While the three players will leave the club for sure, James Milner is expected to continue for one more season on a new contract. The veteran has stepped up on several occasions, and will stay for one more season if rumours are true.
Liverpool are searching for new options in midfield to improve for the next season. They are likely to miss out on the Champions League this time around, given their inconsistent performances.
A defensive midfielder to provide cover for Fabinho remains one of the top requirements for Jurgen Klopp’s side this summer. Jude Bellingham is one of the primary targets for the club, alongside Chelsea’s Mason Mount. However, there is nothing close to being agreed with either English midfielder as of yet.
