According to rumors in Spain, Liverpool is preparing to make a move for Barcelona’s young midfielder Gavi. Gavi’s current LaLiga contract expires in 2023, and he has been linked with several big European clubs.
Liverpool and Barcelona
Liverpool wants to bolster their squad this summer, and they’ll put Barcelona to the test by paying Gavi’s £41 million release clause. According to Sports, Barcelona’s director of football Mateu Alemany put Gavi’s contract renewal talks on hold but promised him a new contract in January.
Serious discussions about extending the contract will now begin, but sources close to Gavi believe Barcelona will offer low sums in comparison to other members of the squad. The 17-year-old is eager to renew his contract and is willing to work out a deal, but he wants to feel appreciated by the club.
Efforts to Sign Gavi
Liverpool have ‘strengthened’ their efforts to recruit Gavi, who is also being pursued by Mauricio Pochettino of Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. This season, the Spain international has been in outstanding form for Barcelona. He has made 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and assisting on six occasions.
Following Barcelona’s 4-2 win against Atletico Madrid in February, Xavi praised the youngster’s flexibility. He said: “Gavi is very versatile, and can play in multiple positions. Today, we played with a false winger and a false striker. I was looking for superiority in the midfield. Usually, I want true wingers, but each game is a different world, and my decisions are determined by that.”
When Barcelona hosts Cadiz on Monday night, they will look to extend their outstanding league run.
