Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 at Anfield, extracting revenge for their exit in the previous edition of the Champions League. Trent Alexander-Arnold was the star of the game, providing two world class assists to defeat Diego Simeone’s men.

Diogo Jota opened the scoring for the Merseysiders, converting an inch-perfect cross from the right-back. The Portuguese arrived at the far post and glanced the cross past Jan Oblak. The Slovenian stood no chance of stopping the effort, and the home team took the lead 13 minutes into the game.

Jurgen Klopp’s team would double their lead shortly after, and this time, it was Sadio Mane converting a perfectly weighted through ball from Alexander-Arnold. The Senegalese winger did well to hold of Rodrigo De Paul, and his movement allowed him to get in perfect position to beat Jan Oblak.

Things turned from bad to worse for the Rojiblancos, with Felipe being sent off ten minutes before halftime. The Brazilian kicked Sadio Mane, and the referee was about to produce a yellow card. However, he ignored all three calls of the official, and was sent off as a result.

The visitors tried protesting the decision, but the referee was not interested at all. Instead, he booked Luis Suarez for dissent. On the other side of half time, both teams would have goals disallowed by VAR, and Atletico were unable to beat Alisson on the other end.

Liverpool have qualified to the knockout stages, while Atletico are third with 4 points from as many games.
