Liverpool have qualified for the quarter finals of the Champions League over two legs, with a 2-1 scoreline on aggregate. The Premier League club were defeated by Inter Milan at Anfield in the second leg, but due to their 2-0 win at San Siro, they were able to progress despite losing the game.
Lautaro Martinez ended his goalscoring drought with a stunning strike to beat Alisson, in what proved to be the only goal of the game.
Liverpool through to last 8 of the UCL
Joel Matip came mighty close to giving the home side the lead, but his header crashed off the woodwork. Mohamed Salah would end up hitting the frame of the goal twice during the game. Both the instances were cases where he would’ve been expected to score. But, he wasn’t at his clinical best in the game, which didn’t have strong repercussions in the end.
Shortly after Lautaro Martinez got the lead at the hour mark, Alexis Sanchez was sent off for a rash tackle on Fabinho. Despite going a man down with half an hour left to play, Inter Milan were able to hold on to their lead, but it wasn’t enough.
Ultimately, it all counts for nought since Liverpool have progressed to the last 8 of the Champions League. On the other hand, Inter Milan now turn their focus to the Serie A and Coppa Italia, both titles that they can win this season.
