Lionel Messi has been strongly linked with a return to Barcelona this season. The Argentine will be leaving PSG at the end of his contract with them in June, and will be available as a free agent.
And in spite of extremely financially lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia, his future remains undecided. Barcelona are the top alternative for the player, who has recently won the Ligue 1 title for the second time with PSG.
Lionel Messi’s potential Barcelona salary revealed
For Barcelona, the financial aspect is the main challenge when it comes to re-signing Messi. They have been asked to reduce their wages by €200 million this summer by La Liga. The club has made some progress towards that, with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba set to leave at the end of the season.
However, no players have been sold by the club to raise funds as of yet. The board has also submitted an economic viability plan to La Liga, which is yet to be approved. And it must be signed off by the league body in order for Messi’s return to happen.
If it does go through, Lionel Messi’s new salary at Barcelona will only be €1 more than Robert Lewandowski, who is the highest earner at Barcelona right now. For the Argentine, money has never been an issue. But the board still wants to place the club legend at the top of the wage structure, although it would be by a small margin.
