FC Barcelona have received a boost in their pursuit of Lionel Messi this summer. The Argentine was in talks with PSG to renew prior to the World Cup, but hasn’t fully agreed to a renewal yet. He was reportedly waiting to understand the sporting project for next year before committing, but talks have completely stalled now.

Moreover, he is dreaming of a return to Barcelona with his family, who are also keen on moving. As a result, the Spanish side are growing in confidence to secure the return of their best player of all time.

Lionel Messi transfer news: Increasing chances of Messi returning to Barcelona

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has been in fine form this season, scoring 20 goals and providing 18 assists across all competitions. However, PSG were eliminated from the Champions League in the Round of 16, after a goalless two legs against Bayern Munich.

Both Xavi and Joan Laporta have publicly expressed their desire to re-sign Lionel Messi in the summer. The player will also agree to a lower wage to facilitate the move. But, Barcelona’s financial struggles could get in the way of that.

La Liga have asked the club to submit a detailed financial plan of how they will go about the operation. They are aware that it will be a significant boost to them as well, and there are rumours that media surrounding his return have already started to be produced.

The Catalonian side are struggling to register new contracts for Gavi, Ronald Araujo and Marcos Alonso. And they have also been asked to trim their expenses by around €200 million. Given these restrictions, it could be very difficult for them to afford Messi. But, it might just work out if they can play their cards right.
