Lionel Messi is set to discuss a new contract with PSG in the coming days. The Argentine has won the 2022 World Cup, and will now decide his club future.
There were rumours that he was going to sign for Inter Miami in the MLS. But, he never reached a full agreement with the club to seal a transfer. PSG were also pushing to get the player to extend his stay. And now, there is a good chance that he could be offered a raise on his current €30 million per season.
Lionel Messi to be offered new PSG contract
The player’s agent and father, Jorge Messi, will be in Paris in the coming weeks to discuss the new contract. The narrative that PSG are pushing for is to have Lionel Messi retire in Paris to dissociate his strong association with Barcelona. This is the aim even if he goes on to play in the MLS at a later date.
The club’s revenue increased €700 million in the very first season that Messi joined them. Shirt sales increased to over a million, with around 60% of them having Messi on the back.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or award winner has also attracted a range of new sponsors to the club such as Crypto.com, PlayBetR, GOAT, Snart Good Thins, Volt, Gorillas, Dior, Sports Water, Big Cola and Autohero.
Their sponsorship with Nike increased by 30-40%, with a deal worth €75 million in place until 2032. And having the 35-year-old’s commitment as a World Cup winner – they could receive an even higher revenue with more shirt sales and sponsors.
Messi has been taking time off from club football after winning the World Cup. And he is now expected to make his return, which could happen as soon as the game against Angers.
