Lionel Messi has equalled two records with his stunning free-kick goal against Ecuador in the South American qualifiers. The Argentine scored a vital goal to help his side pick up the win late in the game, curling it beyond the wall and leaving the goalkeeper stranded.

In the process, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner matched his former Barcelona teammate and friend Luis Suarez for the most goals in the South American qualifiers at 29. On the other hand, he also matched David Beckham’s record for having the fifth most free-kick goals of all-time.

Lionel Messi earns new records with free-kick goal against Ecuador

The Argentina captain has now scored 106 goals in 176 games for his national side. And things don’t seem to be slowing down for the World Cup winner, in spite of finally winning every title there is to win in the sport.

Lionel Messi branded his teammate Cristian Romero as the best defender in the world right now, after his clean sheet in the game. The centre-back has improved significantly this season under Ange Postecoglou and put in a great performance for his national team once again.

The reigning World Cup winners are expected to qualify for the 2026 edition as well, which will be played in North America. It remains to be seen whether Messi will stay on and play another edition of the tournament with the national side or whether he will hang up his boots by then.
