Lionel Messi scored all five goals for Argentina in their 5-0 win against Estonia at the Estadio El Sadar in Pamplona. The recently crowned Finalissima winners pulled off a victory lap following their trophy win, absolutely demolishing Estonia in their game.
They registered 79% possession, and scored five goals from 24 shots on goal. With performances like these, they are seeming like strong favourites to go on and win the World Cup later this year in Qatar.
Lionel Messi scores five goals for only the second time in his career
The only other time the seven-time Ballon d’Or award winner scored five goals in a game was against Bayer Leverkusen in Barcelona’s 7-1 win against them in the 2012 Champions League. This is the first time he has scored five for his country, and did so with his side keeping a clean sheet as well.
Messi also scored his 56th career hat-trick in the process, and is four behind Cristiano Ronaldo. Interestingly enough, he scored all of six goals in the 21/22 Ligue 1 season, and scored five in this game itself.
The World Cup is expected to be a huge turning point in the career of many footballers, Lionel Messi included. The Argentina captain has said that he doesn’t know what will happen after the competition in Qatar, hinting that he could hang up his boots afterwards as well. But for now, we have one of the greatest talents of all-time to enjoy.
