Manchester City have not yet given up hope in the pursuit of global football superstar Lionel Messi. Although there was an entire saga that revolved around Messi and president Bartomeu, a move was always out of the question considering legal connotations were in the radar. However, should Messi not further extend his contract over the course of this season, he would be a free agent in the summer of 2021.

Omar Berrada, the COO of Manchester City, was recently quoted as saying, “If he leaves Barcelona and Messi becomes something that can be discussed, then we could explore that option.” So clearly, the City hierarchy have not yet ruled out the option of signing Leo Messi.

The Argentine forward was clear that going to court to resolve his contractual issues with Barcelona, was not an option. Apparently, the reported clause of exiting for free at any time was something that did not see the light, despite the burofax being sent.

But then again, Barca have not held the aces in the Messi situation for a long time. And as January draws closer, that only becomes more viable for the latter. The financial situation of the club is in dire straits now, with a reported €820 million debt. Seeing Messi in a Manchester City shirt might not be as unimaginable as previously thought then. Even at his current age, Messi is very much capable of going for at least 3-4 more seasons at the highest level. Previously people have questioned about whether diminutive and less physical players could quite cut it in a rough and tough themed league like the Premier League.

But David Silva showed the world that is not necessarily a requirement. And most certainly, a worldwide giant like Lionel Messi could leave his mark in football. Now all that remains to be seen is whether he himself decides that it is the end of the road at the Catalan club. And if he does finalize on a move, would City necessarily be his most preferred destination.
