Lionel Messi is out of contract with PSG in 2023, and rumours linking him with a return to Barcelona have been growing stronger. However, it has been stated repeatedly that the player will only make a decision on his future next year, after the World Cup.

This is because the tournament in Qatar is his main focus for the time being. According to Fabrizio Romano, sources close to the player confirm that he is not even thinking about his club future at the time, and will make that decision when the time is right.

Joan Laporta has announced that he hopes Messi will retire at Barcelona. Moreover, the club’s vice president Eduard Romeu has also hinted that a return for the Argentine may be possible if they can get their wage bill sorted out.

Barcelona are continuing to discuss the prospect of their greatest ever player returning once his contract with PSG runs out. But, the French giants are also keen to keep him at the club and at least try to negotiate a contract renewal.

As of right now, there is nothing decided and nothing advanced about the forward’s future. And we will only learn about the next chapter of his career after the World Cup has been played out.
