Lewis Hamilton wins 2021 British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has won the 2021 British Grand Prix after an exhilarating race that saw the Englishman take the first position in the 50th lap.

Before Hamilton took the lead, the race was led by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. However, he would drop to second place following Hamilton overtaking him. Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes took the last place on the podium, ahead of Lando Norris and Daniel Rocciardo.

The start of the race was an extremely heated one, as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton engaged in yet another battle for the lead position. While the Dutchman was getting the better of Hamilton, he suffered a fearsome crash on a turn in the very first lap. His car went crashing sideways into the tire barrier, leaving the spectators concerned.

FIA have released a statement regarding the crash, and have confirmed that Verstappen has walked away and is being given medical attention: “Following an incident during the FIA Formula 1 British Grand Prix today, 18/07/21, the driver of car #33, Max Verstappen, has been taken to a local hospital for further precautionary checks.”

The race was red flagged, and Lewis Hamilton was investigated for his involvement in the crash as his car contacted Verstappen’s to lead to the accident. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner was fuming to race director Michael Masi, telling him: ‘That corner he (Hamilton) was never near alongside.  Every driver who does this circuit knows you don’t stick a wheel inside in Copse. That’s an enormous accident and it was 100% Max’s corner so as far as I’m concerned full blame lies on Hamilton who should have never been in that position. Thank god he’s walked away unscathed so I hope you deal with it appropriately’

Hamilton served a 10-second punishment in the latter stages, but managed to pull off a great comeback to win the race. Verstappen remains at the top of the standings with 185 points, while Hamilton is second with 152.
