According to a leak from Kepler_L2 on the NeoGAF forums, Sony has now finalized the design of the system-on-chip (SoC) for its PlayStation 6, with AO tapeout currently planned for later this year. Tapeout is the very last step in the design cycle before manufacturing a chip. Historically, Sony has released its products about two years after the AO tape out, which points to a potential 2027 launch if these leaks are accurate.

In terms of hardware, the PS6 is likely to feature a semi-custom AMD APU after Intel lost out on the processors in 2022. The Zen 5 CPU will have 8 cores and 16 threads, representing a significant performance boost over the Zen 2 CPU found in the PS5. Such a hardware upgrade will provide for a higher-end gaming experience, particularly with graphics.
