Leaks suggest that Sony’s PlayStation 6 may launch earlier than expected, possibly as soon as 2027. Sony previously indicated its next-gen console would be released in 2027, but documents released by the company suggest it could be in 2028. But recent leaks have shed new light on PS6’s hardware and timeline and may indicate that the PlayStation 6’s launch is actually sooner than you would expect.

Leaks Reveal Sony PlayStation 6 Expected Launch in 2027 with AMD Zen 5, 4K 120FPS Support

According to a leak from Kepler_L2 on the NeoGAF forums, Sony has now finalized the design of the system-on-chip (SoC) for its PlayStation 6, with AO tapeout currently planned for later this year. Tapeout is the very last step in the design cycle before manufacturing a chip. Historically, Sony has released its products about two years after the AO tape out, which points to a potential 2027 launch if these leaks are accurate.

In terms of hardware, the PS6 is likely to feature a semi-custom AMD APU after Intel lost out on the processors in 2022. The APU is expected to pair AMD’s Zen 5 CPU with the UDNA GPU, formerly known as RDNA 5. The Zen 5 CPU will have 8 cores and 16 threads, representing a significant performance boost over the Zen 2 CPU found in the PS5. Such a hardware upgrade will provide for a higher-end gaming experience, particularly with graphics.

According to the report, the PlayStation 6 will support 4K gaming at 120FPS and 8K gaming at 60FPS. Expect it to also utilize AI-based upscaling technologies for superior graphics. In addition, Sony plans to upgrade the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) and incorporate AMD’s upcoming FidelityFX Super Resolution 5 (FSR 5) to deliver smoother, higher-quality gaming performance. If these developments hold true, the PS6 could be a major step forward in gaming technology.
