Four words, and fans everywhere reached for tissues. In the closing moments of *Lanterns*, the Halogram tells John Stewart he loves him, and for the first time, he calls him “Junior.” Showrunner Chris Mundy has now explained why that tiny detail matters so much.

## Lanterns Finale Moment

| Detail | What Happened |
| --- | --- |
| **Episode** | “Dirt and Stars” (Season 1 finale) |
| **Characters** | John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Halogram (Kyle Chandler) |
| **Key line** | Halogram says “I love you, too, Junior” |
| **First time?** | Yes, he’d only ever said “trainee” |
| **Revealed by** | Co-creator Chris Mundy (via the *LA Times*) |

## A Love Story That Needed a Loss

Mundy described the bond between John and Hal as a kind of love story, though one of them had to die for the two to truly come together. Hal Jordan was murdered in the present day, leaving only his backup consciousness, Halogram, to fill the gap.

That’s why the ending feels so bittersweet. After John relays Hal’s final words, “I love you,” Halogram answers in kind and signs off. Mundy admits it’s heartbreaking that the two people we followed all season never fully get their moment together.

## Why “Junior” Is a Big Deal?

Throughout the series, Halogram only ever called John “trainee.” The new nickname lands because it’s affectionate, personal and, crucially, earned. It’s the closest thing to closure the pair could get.

## The Clue Fans Can’t Stop Discussing

Here’s where it gets interesting. Halogram was dormant while Hal wore it and was unaware it hadn’t been updated in a decade. John never said Hal’s nickname for him out loud, so how did Halogram know it?

One theory is that John subconsciously shaped it through the ring, quietly keeping Hal alive within him. It would also echo the comics, where a Lantern once built a living construct of a dead loved one. If true, writers could keep Halogram around simply by having John will it.

## Is Hal Jordan Really Gone?

Sinestro hinted earlier that recharging John’s ring would erase Halogram, and later claimed he could bring Hal back to life for real. That’s probably a ploy, but it plants a seed.

When asked directly about resurrecting Hal, Mundy said he has no idea, adding that fiction has a million “what ifs.” He also said the writers always assumed there would be a Season 2 without deliberately setting it up, preferring to look at what they’d made and go from there. Translation: nothing is off the table.

## What Comes Next for Lanterns?

Season 2 is in development at DC Studios, though HBO hasn’t formally renewed it. Meanwhile, Aaron Pierre is set to appear as John Stewart in *Man of Tomorrow* next summer, so fans won’t be waiting long for more of him.
