In a proud moment for Indian cinema, Kiran Rao’s critically acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards. The Film Federation of India (FFI) announced the decision on Monday, naming the film as the country’s contender for the Best International Film category.
Rao’s satirical exploration of patriarchal norms in rural India was chosen over several notable films, including the Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light. This significant selection has placed Laapataa Ladies at the forefront of India’s hopes for global recognition at the Oscars.
The Contenders: A Tough Competition
The selection of Laapataa Ladies was no easy feat, as it faced fierce competition from a diverse pool of 29 films. Some of the prominent contenders included Bollywood’s much-anticipated Animal, Malayalam National Award-winning Aattam, and the critically lauded All We Imagine As Light, which won big at the Cannes Film Festival. Among the entries were also significant titles like Tamil film Maharaja, Telugu blockbusters Kalki 2898 AD and Hanu-Man, and Hindi films Swatantraya Veer Savarkar and Article 370. This year’s selection process was overseen by a 13-member panel chaired by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, who unanimously chose Laapataa Ladies to represent India on the global stage.
In recent years, Indian cinema has witnessed varied Oscar entries. Last year, Malayalam superhit 2018: Everyone is a Hero was sent to the Academy Awards, but this time, Laapataa Ladies emerged as the front-runner, despite the stiff competition.
Why Laapataa Ladies Stood Out
What sets Laapataa Ladies apart is its unique, light-hearted satirical approach to a serious subject—patriarchy. Set in rural India in 2001, the film tells the story of two young brides who are accidentally swapped during a train journey. The film explores the consequences of this mix-up, intertwining humor with a sharp critique of societal norms, especially surrounding women and their roles in rural communities. The film’s engaging narrative, paired with its sharp social commentary, has resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.
Produced by Kiran Rao in collaboration with Aamir Khan under Kindling Productions and Aamir Khan Productions, Laapataa Ladies has been praised for its heartwarming and empowering storyline. Featuring rising talents Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastav in lead roles, along with seasoned actors like Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma, the film has captivated audiences with its refreshing take on complex social issues.
Kiran Rao’s Vision and Oscar Aspirations
Kiran Rao, known for her distinctive filmmaking style, has long hoped that her work would receive international recognition. Speaking earlier this year, she expressed her optimism about Laapataa Ladies being selected for the Oscars. In an interview, she had said, “My dream would be fulfilled if it was [chosen for the Oscars], but it’s a process, and I’m hoping it’ll be considered.” Her words proved prophetic as her film now embarks on the journey to Hollywood’s biggest night.
However, Rao emphasized that for her, the ultimate reward lies in the audience’s response. “Our primary recognition comes from the audience’s response at the box office. If the viewers and the nation appreciate our work, that would be the greatest accolade for us,” she said at a press screening for the film in February.
While she is thrilled by the film’s Oscar selection, she had also previously noted the importance of national appreciation. “There is a specific community tasked with assessing and selecting the finest films of the year, and if our film is deemed worthy, we will submit it for the prestigious Oscars,” Rao remarked. With this Oscar selection, it seems that her vision has found the recognition it deserves.
The Road to the Academy Awards
With Laapataa Ladies officially chosen as India’s entry for the 2025 Oscars, the film now begins its campaign for consideration in the Best International Film category. This selection places the film on a challenging, yet exciting path towards competing with films from all over the world. Historically, India has sent several remarkable films to the Oscars, though only three have reached the final nominations—Mother India (1957), Salaam Bombay! (1988), and Lagaan (2001). Interestingly, Lagaan was also produced by Aamir Khan, marking a significant personal connection for the producer.
As Laapataa Ladies sets its sights on the Oscars, the film will likely have to navigate intense global competition. Nevertheless, the film’s combination of humor, poignant social commentary, and a heartwarming storyline makes it a strong contender for the coveted award.
The selection of Laapataa Ladies as India’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards is a testament to the film’s powerful message and unique storytelling. Kiran Rao’s satirical take on patriarchy, wrapped in a narrative that is both heartwarming and humorous, has resonated not only with Indian audiences but also with critics globally. As the film prepares to embark on its Oscar journey, hopes are high that Laapataa Ladies will make its mark on the international stage, showcasing the strength and versatility of Indian cinema.
