Owned by Kasturi Mitra, a first-generation entrepreneur, Kolkata Thunder Strikers is passionate about empowering female athletes and redefining traditional gender roles through sports. The team is dedicated to building a competitive and strong roster, poised to revitalize city-based sports teams in West Bengal and Eastern India.
A Game-Changer for West Bengal Sports
Priya Jain, Executive Director of Pavna Industries and Director of Pavna Sports Venture, welcomed the Kolkata Thunder Strikers to the WHL, expressing excitement about the team’s potential. “Representing one of India’s most fervent sporting regions, KTS is set to tap into a deep pool of talent and connect with the passionate sports culture of West Bengal,” Jain said. She also emphasized the team’s potential to boost the competitive spirit of the league while inspiring future athletes across India.
Fostering Grassroots Development
Kolkata Thunder Strikers is one of the six teams participating in India’s inaugural women’s handball championship. The team will actively engage in community outreach, hosting training camps, organizing school tournaments, and promoting the sport through social media and fan-focused events. Mitra shared her vision of promoting handball at every level and reviving the once-strong multi-sports culture in West Bengal.
“Our goal goes beyond just creating a competitive team,” said Mitra. “We aim to cultivate young talent, engage the community, and foster a love for handball that will help the sport grow across the country.”

Organized under the South Asian Handball Federation, and the Asian Handball Federation, and supported by the Handball Association of India, the WHL is committed to the growth of women’s handball in India. The league aims to inspire young girls, build a grassroots network, and create more opportunities for women in sports. With inclusivity at its core, WHL is set to redefine the sports landscape for women across the nation.
