Kerkez: The story of Liverpool’s shift to Andoni Iraola’s style is pretty fascinating. This summer, the club faced a tough tactical identity crisis as they moved away from Arne Slot’s methodical approach to Iraola’s aggressive philosophy.

The upheaval followed a rough domestic season where [Liverpool](https://technosports.co.in/manchester-united-liverpool-rivalry/) finished in 5th place in the Premier League, lagging a staggering 25 points behind champions Arsenal. That disappointing outcome prompted the Anfield hierarchy to part ways with Slot on May 30, kicking off a managerial search that ended with the hiring of the former Bournemouth boss.

The sudden sacking surprised the entire football community, especially the club’s new signings who had bought into the previous vision. As first reported by [ESPN](https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/49466413/how-andoni-iraola-changing-liverpool-arne-slot-us-preseason-tour) during the club’s preseason tour in the U.S., new left-back Milos admitted that Slot’s firing was a complete shock. The defender was in Serbia, fast asleep, when his brother woke him up with the breaking news. He mentioned that he’s kept in touch with Slot through a few private messages, even as the team pivots to a radically different tactical setup under new management.

[Liverpool](https://technosports.co.in/unpacking-heavy-metal-pressing/)‘s recent difficulties stemmed from a stagnant tactical system that didn’t evolve after their impressive 2024-25 Premier League title win.

Teams quickly figured out how to exploit Slot’s deep build-up strategies, revealing a lack of defensive intensity and leaving the squad worn out by spring. To address these issues, the club’s management assessed several candidates during the early summer.

Looking at the managerial candidates highlights the different strategic choices the club faces moving forward.

| Manager Profile | Tactical Approach | Primary Downside |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Arne Slot (Previous) | Possession control, structured build-up | Prone to stagnation against low blocks |
| Andoni Iraola (Current) | High press, relentless man-to-man duels | High physical toll and injury risk |
| Traditional Low Block Coach | Defensive solidity, counter-attacks | Alienates attacking fanbase and star forwards |

Milos firmly believes that Iraola is the right fit for [Liverpool](https://technosports.co.in/liverpool-iraola-vision/)‘s new setup due to his strong tactical identity. The Hungarian defender—whose transfer from Bournemouth had conflicting reports about the fee, with some saying it was **£40 million** and others suggesting **£45 million**—noted that training has changed significantly. The new strategy focuses on sustained pressure, relentless pressing, and a much more aggressive defensive line compared to last season.

If [Liverpool](https://technosports.co.in/tag/liverpool/) wants to close the 25-point gap to the Premier League leaders, management will need to embrace the rigorous physical demands of Iraola’s system.

This gamble on the Basque manager comes with fitness risks for a squad not used to such intense pressing. However, as the team gears up for the upcoming fixtures, the initial shock of Slot’s departure is giving way to cautious optimism on the training ground.

**Milos confirmed he learned about Arne Slot’s May 30 sacking through a wake-up call from his brother while visiting Serbia.**
