Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi Set to Expand its Horizons Beyond Sports

The Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi, renowned as the home ground of the Kerala Blasters Football Club, is poised to broaden its scope beyond sports by venturing into hosting non-sporting events such as concerts and award shows.

The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), which oversees the stadium, has revealed plans to invest in state-of-the-art ‘turf protection tiles,’ drawing inspiration from leading stadiums worldwide, particularly during off-season periods, as reported by Manorama Online.

With a significant allocation of Rs 8 crore from its annual budget, the GCDA is driving this initiative to optimize the stadium’s utilization throughout the year. Chairman K Chandran Pillai articulated the vision, underscoring the importance of harnessing the iconic venue’s potential beyond its current seasonal limitations.

“The JLN Stadium has a storied history of hosting international cricket matches and now serves as the proud home ground of the Kerala Blasters. However, its facilities remain inactive for a substantial portion of the year, typically between October and February,” Pillai conveyed to Manorama Online.
