Malayalam cinema had a big moment on May 29, 2026. **Kattalan**, the gory action drama starring **Antony Varghese**, made its theatrical debut on the Eid al-Adha holiday and delivered **₹3.50 crore gross on Day 1** at the Kerala box office — the best opening day of the actor’s career. It’s a promising start, but the real test lies ahead with a mighty competitor still ruling the screens.

## A Record Start — With a Catch

The gory action drama began its box office run on a promising note, smashing ₹3.50 crore gross on Day 1 at the Kerala box office, becoming the actor’s biggest opener of all time. The Eid al-Adha holiday undoubtedly gave it a natural boost, pulling in audiences looking for a massy entertainer on a festive day.

However, the movie garnered mixed to average word-of-mouth among the audience, which is concerning for its business ahead — though there is still some hope that it might sail through a successful theatrical run.

## The Drishyam 3 Problem

Here’s the elephant — or rather, the titan — in the room. Kattalan is facing Drishyam 3 in cinemas. The Mohanlal starrer is going riot even in its second weekend and is expected to dominate the Mollywood box office for the next few weeks. Competing against one of Malayalam cinema’s most beloved franchises at peak momentum is no easy task, and Kattalan will need strong audience legs to hold its screens.

The Kerala box office, as [Wikipedia notes on Malayalam cinema](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malayalam_cinema), is uniquely audience-driven — word-of-mouth can either elevate or sink a film within its first weekend, making Day 2 and Day 3 absolutely critical for Kattalan’s trajectory.

## What Is Kattalan About?

The film revolves around a brutal ivory cartel war, following a man who finds himself caught between relentless greed and the untamed wilderness. Beyond Antony Varghese, the film boasts a strong ensemble including Sunil, Kabir Duhan Singh, Parth Tiwari (of *Kill* fame), Jagadish, Dushara Vijayan, Siddique, and several others in key roles. The double punch of Ravi Basrur and B. Ajaneesh Loknath on music duties is also a serious asset — both composers have delivered powerful scores for high-octane action films before.
