Karim Benzema is arguably the most underrated number 9 of his generation. The Frenchman has been at the biggest club in the world for a decade and has fended off competition from several top players during his career with Los Blancos.Â
The striker has started the 21/22 season in fantastic form and has already scored 8 goals in La Liga after 6 goals. The player scored a brace in yesterday’s game against Mallorca as Madrid thrashed them 6-1. He now has the most goal contributions of any player in the top European leagues, in 2021.Â
Robert Lewandowski is the closest to Benzema, with the Polish striker having 34 goal contributions, the same as Benzema. Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland are next on the list with 31 goal contributions each, followed by Kylian Mbappe.Â
The 33-year-old has reached 200 La Liga goals for Real Madrid and is only surpassed by Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul and Alfredo di Stefano. Should Benzema continue his stellar spell of form, he could cross Raul and Di Stefano very soon.Â
Benzema has been the star of the Real Madrid attack since Cristiano Ronaldo departed for Juventus in 2018. And it is now that the Frenchman is truly getting the praise he fully deserves. Benzema is putting up numbers worthy of a Ballon d’Or at the end of the season, and if he manages to help Real Madrid win trophies this year, then the Golden Ball might just be awarded to him.
