Prior to starting the 2022 World Cup, France announced their decision to leave Karim Benzema out of their squad due to injury. The striker had arrived injured to the national team camp, and was unable to recover in time to make it to the squad.

As a result, he left Qatar, but a replacement was not called up. So far, Olivier Giroud has taken his place as the number 9 in the team, and has equalled Thierry Henry for the most national team goals.

Karim Benzema could return to France team if he is fit

Technically, Karim Benzema is still part of the squad and can return to the team if he fully recovers. Based on the latest updates, he is currently ahead of schedule and is recovering well from his injury.

So, he could return to the France national team if he can make a complete recovery. However, the final decision will rest on Didier Deschamps, the head coach, and the France Football Federation.

Considering the way the defending champions have been playing, they could win the tournament yet again. And if they do, Benzema will be entitled to a winner’s medal since he is still technically part of the squad.

Whether or not he returns to contribute on the pitch now remains to be seen in the forthcoming weeks.
