RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol has admitted that he was raised as a Liverpool supporter amidst uncertainty surrounding his future. The Croatia international was one of the standout performers at the 2022 World Cup, as his country finished third.
He has also shed light on the seemingly failed transfer to Chelsea. The West London side have gone on to sign Benoit Badiashile from Monaco as his alternative. The reason being that the asking price was simply too high for them to meet.
Josko Gvardiol opens up on Liverpool support
“And if I were to ask 10-year-old Josko, what would he say in which club he would want to play?,” was the question.
“That would definitely be Liverpool. Since I was little, I watched a lot of Liverpool matches with my dad, and we covered every season in detail. It is a club that has remained in my heart.”
However, this doesn’t confirm that he is indeed set on a switch to Liverpool just yet. The likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid have been exploring the possibilities of a deal. But, nothing has been finalised as of yet.
“They [Chelsea] did not give up,” Josko Gvardiol told Danas. “But it was agreed that we would go for the winter. Winter has come, so we need to see what and how to proceed, but it’s okay, there’s still plenty of time, we’ll see.
“Since I was a child, I always gravitated towards the English league. We all know what kind of league it is. I don’t know if I’m mature enough and ready for that league. We will see, when I feel that this is the moment, that I have crossed a certain level and reached the border in Germany, then I will look further.”
