After the sacking of Julen Lopetegui, Jorge Sampaoli is expected to become Sevilla’s new manager. The Argentine was previously in charge of the club for the 2016/17 season, and will now return to the first team.
Sampaoli has been without a job since the end of last season, having left Marseille. He led them to an impressive Champions League finish but decided not to continue further with the team due to differences with the upper management.
Jorge Sampaoli to become new Sevilla manager
Lopetegui was sacked following the 4-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. The departures of key players like Diego Carlos and Jules Kounde has not helped their case, with the club failing to build on their success of previous seasons.
Talks were held with the former Chile national team manager even before the sacking of Lopetegui. This is because the former head coach was in danger of being replaced prior to the UCL defeat as well.
The final details are being discussed between the manager’s agents and the La Liga side. And soon, the official statement will be made, confirming his appointment.
Sevilla are currently 17th in the table with five points from seven games. It now remains to be seen whether they can recover from the difficult start to the season with a new manager at the helm.
