As confirmed by Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, Jerome Boateng will be leaving as a free agent in the summer when his contract with the club expires.

“That was a joint decision of the club management and the coach was also involved,” sports director Hasan Salihamidzic told Sky. “I explained that to Jerome, he understood.”

The player joined Bayern Munich in 2011 from Manchester City and has gone on to win every major trophy with the German giants. The defender has won the Champions League title twice, and also won the World Cup with Germany in 2012 while a Bayern Munich player.

Boateng was directly at fault for the third goal leading to the winner for Paris Saint-Germain scored by Kylian Mbappe to end Bayern’s unbeaten Champions League streak last night. The German has not been offered a new contract by the club, which is in contrast to the treatment of his teammate, David Alaba.

Alaba is also on the move this summer, but was offered a contract extension multiple times by Bayern, which the player rejected.

A return to the Premier League could be on the cards with a move to Chelsea being rumoured in recent months. Additionally, Barcelona could also be a destination for the player, having been in the market for free agents in the form of Gini Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay.
