Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was keen on keeping the 37-year-old for another year. But, there were never any formal talks with the board in order to renew the contract. Milner will now end an eight-year spell with the Merseyside club, during which he made 328 appearances and won every available trophy with the team.

Alongside James Milner, Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also be leaving the club upon the expiry of their contracts. The team is planning a massive midfield overhaul this summer and the clearout will make room for the new signings in the squad.

Bayern’s Ryan Gravenberch, Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister and Mason Mount of Chelsea are some of the names that have been strongly linked with a switch to Anfield in the near future.
