Jailer is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language action thriller directed by Nelson and produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures. The picture stars Rajinikanth in the lead role, alongside Vinayakan, Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi, Sunil, Mirnaa Menon, besides Yogi Babu in supporting roles.
The film was officially publicized in February 2022 with the working title Thalaivar 169, being the 169th flick of Rajinikanth, while the official title Jailer was announced in June. Principal photography commenced in August 2022 in Chennai and wrapped in June 2023. The tune is composed by Anirudh Ravichander, while Vijay Kartik Kannan and R. Nirmal fingered the cinematography and editing.
The Jailer was released dramatically on 10 August 2023 to positive reviews from critics who praised its screenwriting, direction, cast recitals, characterization, and background score.
In its first weekend of release, the film grossed ₹222–300 crore worldwide, production it one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2023.

Jailer Box Office Collection
Superstar Rajinikanth made a comeback subsequently two years with Jailer and How! Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer was the highest-grossing Tamil film in 2023. Sponsored by Kalanithi Maran, the film also stars Vasanth Ravi, Shiva Rajkumar, Mirna Menon, Jackie Shroff, Vinayakan, besides Tamannaah Bhatia in essential roles.
On Day 1, Jailer composed more than Rs 44.50 crore in India for all languages and arose as the highest-grossing film of 2023 in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, besides Karnataka. In total, the film crossed Rs 50 crore on its opening day. Giving early estimates, Jailer earned Ra 38 crore on Day 4, close to the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide. In India, the total salaries of Jailer stands at Rs 146.40 crore.
The story trails Muthuvel Pandian, a strict jailer, who learns that a prisoner is developing to escape the jail with the help of a gang. He shall leave no stone unturned to stop the evacuation. To party the success of Jailer, Rajinikanth recently visited Badrinath temple. Giving to ANI, he attended Lord Badri Vishal’s sunset Aarti.
Ahead of its release, numerous offices in Chennai and Bengaluru announced a holiday on August 10, Jailer’s release date. Moreover, the offices also provided complimentary tickets to workers to prevent any piracy and leak beforehand the film’s release.
In the meantime, Gadar 2 and OMG 2 are also witnessing growth at the box office. While Gadar 2 is the second-highest opener of Bollywood in 2023, Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 opinions are in the eighth position. On Day 3, Sunny Deol’s film spanned the Rs 100 crore mark and earned Rs 52 crore on its first Sunday. The total salaries of Gadar 2 is at Rs 135.18 crore.
Casting
In April 2022, Ramya Krishnan was described to play a role in the film. In May, there were reports suggesting that Kannada actor Shiva Rajkumar would be seen in a pivotal role. That speculation was established the following month. It marks Shiva Rajkumar’s debut in Tamil cinema. In primary August, Vasanth Ravi was confirmed to be part of the film. Shortly thereafter, on 10 August, Ramya Krishnan established her participation, and on 23 August, Malayalam actor Vinayakan was established.
In July 2022, there were reports suggesting that Yogi Babu would be a part of the picture. That speculation was confirmed on 24 August 2022 by Sun Pictures. On 6 January 2023, it was proclaimed that Mohanlal would be acting in the film in a cameo role. Nearly two weeks later, Sunil and Tamannaah Bhatia were announced as part of the cast for a brief role. In February 2023, Jackie Shroff was announced to be a part of the picture.
