Jack Dorsey’s decentralized app, BitChat, has vanished from Indian app stores. The government ordered its removal, citing non-compliance with local data retention mandates. Built on the Nostr protocol, BitChat’s privacy-first, zero-knowledge architecture clashed with regulatory demands for user audits. While existing users retain local access, the platform faces an uncertain future as India tightens its grip on encrypted communication networks.
