Issy Wong became the first player to achieve a hat-trick in the Indian Women’s Premier League. She did so in the eliminator against UP Warriorz, and helped Mumbai Indians advance to the finals of the competition after winning by 72 runs.
She dismissed Kiran Navgire, Simran Shaikh and Sophie Ecclestone in consecutive deliveries to make history in the inaugural season of the tournament. She had dismissed UPW captain Alyssa Healy earlier in the game, and ended with a figure of 4-15 in her four overs, which was an incredible performance from the England international.
Issy Wong makes history with first-ever WPL hat-trick
“I guess I made a conscious effort just to make sure I execute it (the hat-trick delivery). I think there have been a few moments in the past where I have been in similar situations and have been too excited to be able to focus on execution. I was trying to be quite calm and clear at the end of my mark, and what am I going to bowl,” Issy Wong told Mumbai Indians’ official site.
“When I bowl 24 balls, I look at how many balls I would like to have another go at. So how many did I not execute? That shows whether I had a good or bad day with the ball. I try and be quite levelled because if I can be a bit levelled when it is not going well, and a bit levelled when it is going well, then maybe I will be in an alright place if it evens out.”
Mumbai Indians will face off against Delhi Capitals in the first-ever final of the WPL to crown the inaugural champions.
