The club announced the mutual decision via social media on **Thursday, July 17**, stating, “***Former ISL champions, Chennaiyin FC, have mutually parted ways with head coach Owen Coyle***.” While the split was expected following a disheartening 2024-25 campaign, it still evokes nostalgia for a manager who, at his best, made fans believe in miracles.

## Coyle’s Magic in 2019-20: From Bottom Dwellers to ISL Finalists

Owen Coyle’s association with **Chennaiyin** began in the **2019-20 season** when the club was struggling near the bottom of the table. What followed was nothing short of a footballing fairy tale. Under his leadership, the team staged a dramatic resurgence, culminating in a finals appearance where they narrowly lost to ATK under Antonio Lopez Habas.

Coyle’s man-management, tactical nous, and ability to inspire a disjointed unit into a cohesive squad were widely praised. His journey with Chennaiyin was symbolic of resilience — proof that belief and strategy could defy odds.

## A Resilient Return in 2023: Playoffs After Four-Year Drought

After successful stints with **Jamshedpur FC** — where he won the League Winners’ Shield — and a short tenure with Queen’s Park in Scotland, Coyle made a highly-anticipated return to **Chennaiyin in 2023**. Once again, he made an immediate impact, guiding the team to a top-six finish and a playoff berth after a four-year absence.

Although Chennaiyin FC lost in the playoffs to FC Goa, the resurgence sparked hope of brighter days.

## 2024-25: A Downturn in Fortunes

Sadly, the momentum couldn’t be sustained. The **2024-25 ISL season** proved to be a step backward. Despite **scoring more goals (34)** than the previous season (26) and maintaining their **27-point tally**, Chennaiyin slumped to **11th place** in the table.

This decline in performance ultimately led to the club and Coyle calling it quits — despite the Scotsman still having over a year left on his contract, which was valid till **2025-26**.

## Coyle’s Lasting Impact: More Than Just Wins and Losses

Owen Coyle’s contribution transcended numbers. He was instrumental in **developing young Indian talent**, especially the rise of **Irfan Yadwad**, who earned national team recognition under his guidance. **Lalrinliana Hnamte**, signed in 2024-25, also emerged as a standout under Coyle’s mentorship.

In many ways, Coyle laid the groundwork for the future — nurturing a generation that could carry Chennaiyin forward.

## A Bittersweet Goodbye

The club’s decision to part ways just days after Coyle’s **58th birthday** is being seen as a difficult but necessary one, considering recent form. However, his legacy as **one of the finest coaches in the ISL** remains intact.

**“Coyle’s time at Madras has been marked with resilience, courage and inconsistency in the later stages.”**
