The ISL 2024-25 season will receive a change in the rules, with players and coaches being able to appeal red cards. They will have to submit their claim in writing within two hours of the full-time whistle if they feel they have been wrongfully sent off.

However, the ability to appeal only applies to direct red cards where there is suspected foul play. Second yellows and red cards picked up for offensive and abusive language against players and officials cannot be appealed as per the new rules.

Decisions usually aren’t challenged unless there is conclusive evidence to suggest there has been an obvious error. After the match, the player must submit an email to the AIFF about the claim to complete the process on their end.

The quality of officiating in the ISL has been criticised time and time again. However, it seems like steps are being made to improve things slowly.

The introduction of VAR or VAR lite hasn’t been discussed yet, with rumours suggesting a possible date of 2025 for the introduction of the tech. The costs involved have prevented the AIFF from incorporating it into the league’s top flight.
