Union Berlin had reached an agreement with Isco for him to join as a free agent. The midfielder left Sevilla after falling out with head coach Jorge Sampaoli, and had his contract terminated early as a result.
The Bundesliga club had agreed a contract with him until the end of the season with the option for a further year. However, the move collapsed in the final stages, even though it had a here we go signal from Fabrizio Romano.

Upon his exit from Sevilla, a move to the Premier League was rumoured for the attacking midfielder. Wolves was one of the potential destinations for the playmaker, which would have seen him reunite with former Real Madrid and Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui.
But, he had decided to take up a new challenge in Germany instead. RB Leipzig was one of the other clubs interested in signing him due to the injury to Dani Olmo. But, they ultimately decided to not go all-in, which has allowed Union Berlin to swoop in.
The capital club have been one of the standout performers this season in the German top flight. They are currently in second place, only a point behind league leaders Bayern Munich.
“We wanted to have Isco in Berlin, but we have our limits. These were exceeded today — contrary to the previous agreement”.
