Ralf Rangnick is set to join Manchester United as the interim coach for the next six months. He will then be a consultant, as part of the board for two years. The agreement is expected to be signed this weekend with an official announcement as well.
Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino and Ernesto Valverde were in contention for the job at Old Trafford. But, the board has decided to turn to the German coach instead at this stage.
Why is Ralf Rangnick the perfect candidate for Manchester United?
Manchester United are currently in shambles. They have no identity as a team on the pitch, and need a coach that has a clear style of playing and an ideology that needs to be followed. A general sense of discipline is also missing, which has resulted in a number of costly errors in recent games.
Ralf Rangnick is the man that revolutionized modern football, and is the inspiration behind managers like Jürgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann. He made the idea of Gegenpressing popular in the Bundesliga, managing Schalke, RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim.
Due to his demanding, disciplined and focused nature of coaching, he can turn things around at Manchester United. The only problem, though, is that time will be required to make lasting changes at a club of the stature of Manchester United.
While Rangnick is in charge for six months alone, he will be a part of the board as a consultant. This might also allow him to have a say in the sporting decisions. So, he will certainly be using his experience to find a manager that has similar ideals and can make Manchester United into a transformed team.
But, in no way will it be a quick and easy journey for the club.
